Become a Catechist | Hazte Catequista

Catechesis is not a “job” or a task that is external to the person who is a catechist; because one “is” a catechist and all of life revolves around this mission. In fact, being a catechist is a vocation of service to the Church; what was received as a gift from the Lord should be transmitted in turn. Thus, catechists must constantly return to that first announcement of kerygma which is the gift that changed their life. It is the fundamental proclamation that must continuously resound in the life of Christians, even more so in those who are called to proclaim and teach the faith. 

Being a catechist requires “a firm trust in the Holy Spirit, who is present and active in the Church, the world and the human heart.” The Holy Spirit gives the catechist “joy, serenity and responsibility.” Catechesis is, after all, a spiritual encounter that calls catechists to be true “evangelizers with the Spirit.” In this, our moment in the history of salvation, the Holy Spirit calls the Church to a new stage of evangelization to reconceive the essential link between evangelization and catechesis found in the centrality of covenantal encounter between the Creator and his beloved creatures.

 La catequesis no es un “trabajo” o una tarea externa a la persona que es catequista; porque uno “es” catequista y toda la vida gira en torno a esta misión. De hecho, ser catequista es una vocación de servicio a la Iglesia; lo recibido como don del Señor debe transmitirse a su vez. Por eso, los catequistas deben volver constantemente a aquel primer anuncio del kerygma, que es el don que cambió su vida. Es el anuncio fundamental que debe resonar continuamente en la vida de los cristianos, más aún en aquellos que están llamados a anunciar y enseñar la fe. 

Ser catequista requiere “una confianza firme en el Espíritu Santo, que está presente y activo en la Iglesia, el mundo y el corazón humano”. El Espíritu Santo da al catequista “alegría, serenidad y responsabilidad”. La catequesis es, después de todo, un encuentro espiritual que llama a los catequistas a ser verdaderos “evangelizadores con el Espíritu”. En este, nuestro momento en la historia de la salvación, el Espíritu Santo llama a la Iglesia a una nueva etapa de evangelización para reconcebir el vínculo esencial entre evangelización y catequesis que se encuentra en la centralidad del encuentro de alianza entre el Creador y sus amadas criaturas.
